12-31-08 : Ghostly happenings terrorize family in India

KOLKATA: Sukumar Das, the inspector-in-charge of Khardah police station, got the shock of his life when he picked up the phone on Monday afternoon. The agitated voice at the other end pleaded with the inspector to rush to his aid as soon as possible. Was it a thief? A local tough? A fraudster? No. Ratan Das, the caller, was complaining of ghost attacks in his house.

Das said strange things were happening in his house at Midland Place in the Rahara area over the past fortnight. Often, family members saw household items toppling out of shelves. "One day, the door of our refrigerator suddenly developed cracks and fell off. We also saw flower vases trembling and falling on the floor without anyone even getting near them," complained Das, a clerk at Barrackpore court.

If that was scary enough, worse things were reserved for the family. A few days ago, Das' daughter Rima, who will sit for Madhyamik next year, was reportedly pushed hard from behind and she fell on the floor. But there was no one standing behind her. "My books were also set on fire last week," said the frightened girl.

But the last straw was when the Dases noticed on Monday morning that a corner of the bed had caught fire and the almirah doors had swung open. All the clothes inside shirts, sarees and other garments had been cut up in different sizes. Das called up the police in a few hours.

"My family and I are under tremendous mental trauma. The ghostly happenings are posing a threat to our lives. My wife and daughter are so upset that they want to leave the house right now. Please come and help me," Das said.

World Governments discuss a paranormal topic

12-20-08 : A little something different...

Here at NPI, we usually don't focus on aliens or UFO's, but these stories were too interesting to pass up.
It is quite interesting how both the British and Canadian governments have flat out stated their thoughts on the possibility of alternate life forms and what not. The British government has even gone so far as to declassify many of their old reports which focused on alien contact and UFO's.

Here in the US, we are still told that it's all silly and not to even consider it.

Again, here at NPI we focus primarily on ghosts, spirits and other such anomalous activity, but this is simply a neat paranormal topic. It's something that simply couldn't be ignored.
So...put on your tinfoil caps, unplug all of your electrical appliances, stock up on some Reeses Pieces and check this out:

1,000+ new species discovered!

12-19-08 : Proof that we can hardly understand our world as it is...

The World Wildlife Fund has stated that scientists have discovered more than 1,000 species in Southeast Asia's Greater Mekong region in the past decade.

Among the discoveries was a rat thought to have been extinct 11 million years ago and a cyanide-laced, shocking pink millipede found in what the group called a "biological treasure trove".

The new species highlighted in the report include 519 plants, 279 fish, 88 frogs, 88 spiders, 46 lizards, 22 snakes, 15 mammals, 4 birds, 4 turtles, two salamanders and a toad - an average of two previously undiscovered species a week for the past 10 years.

It's wild to think that people can be so absolutely skeptical about the paranormal when this is proof alone that we barely even understand our own physical world! As soon as we think we know everything, something like this pops up. Over ONE THOUSAND species that have never been seen before, one of which was believed to be flat out extinct.

Our world has a lot to offer, and this shows we still have a lot to learn.

LOTS, but to simplify things, we have videos coming! I'm aiming to have videos completely done and edited by the end of this weekend. Keep an eye out, because by Monday we should have a good handful of videos up and ready to go.
Videos will include some debunking videos of some famous "ghost" videos, as well as some paranormal training and NPI interviews.

12-8-2008: New Classes available in the paranormal!

"Spooky Southcoast" Goes from the Airwaves to the Classroom

Tim Weisberg and Matt Moniz, co-hosts of "Spooky Southcoast" radio, are pleased to announce that they will now be teaching courses at the brand-new Bay State Paranormal Center, located at 20 Broadway (Route 138) in Taunton, MA.

Many of Tim's courses will focus on ghosts and hauntings. These include "Introduction to the Paranormal," a primer on things that go bump in the night; "History of the Paranormal," in which the storied past of ghosts and ghost hunting is examined; "Broadcasts from Beyond," which discusses "ghost boxes" like Frank's Box and the Telephone to the Dead, as well as featuring a live session with one of these devices; and "Paranormal in the Media," a roundtable discussion of the prevelance of the paranormal in today's television, radio and news media.

A night at The Stanley

We'd admired from a distance the grand, rambling set of white buildings perched on the hillside above Estes Park, a pretty little town nestled in the Colorado stretch of the Rockies but had no inkling of its national fame. The storekeeper explained it was one of the top haunted hotels in the US and the inspiration for Stephen King's novel, The Shining.

"It's the second most haunted hotel in the United States," the young woman at the front desk confirmed. "How do you measure hauntedness?" I asked.

She explained it had been judged as such by various psychics and by the Ghost Hunters, a cable program on the Sci-Fi channel. (It is ranked behind the Myrtles Plantation, near New Orleans.) The infamous Room 217 from The Shining was being renovated so the receptionist suggested a room on the fourth floor. "That's where most of the paranormal activity occurs," she said.

Now, I am a sceptic on the grounds that if I were dead and therefore freed from the shackles of corporeality, I would use my powers more wisely than moving furniture around and blowing small gusts of wind. That said, there is nothing more fun than having the life scared out of you by a good horror story. I would love to have my scepticism shattered; life would be far more interesting were it filled with the kind of supernatural mayhem that goes on in Stephen King's novels.

The story that really made the hotel famous was the one in which a drunken Stephen King stumbled up and down the darkened passageways looking for his room. It was October 1973, the last day of the season before the hotel shut down for the winter. King and his wife, Tabitha, were the only guests that night. They were stuck in Estes Park because a road that winds up into the Rocky Mountain National Park, was closed.
After a session in the hotel bar, King got lost. As he wandered around looking for his room, he hit upon the idea of a young family who take the job of caretaking a hotel during the winter, when it is snowed in. He changed the name of the hotel to The Overlook and wrote a story in which the spirits and the isolation drive the father, Jack Torrance, to homicidal madness.

It's easy to see how the Stanley could inspire such a tale. The old, white weatherboards and the striking red roof conjure up an American mountain gothic atmosphere. Inside, the passageways are long and the staircases angular.

On a less stirring note, the Aspen scenes from the Jim Carrey film Dumb and Dumber were also filmed at the Stanley. Carrey stayed in Room 217 and, according to Stephanie, came down in the middle of the night insisting he be moved. He has never explained what happened.
Nothing happened to us, even though we were in room 418, practically the paranormal epicentre. My pants went missing at one stage but turned up exactly where I had misplaced them, under some towels in the bathroom. The toilet flushed oddly and the ceiling fan kept spinning after I turned it off but that was it.

UK survey shows paranormal belief!

11-25-08: Survey shows higher belief in paranormal

While 54 per cent of people believe in God, 58 per cent believe in the supernatural.
Researchers found women were more likely to believe in the supernatural than men, and were more likely to visit a medium.
Nearly a quarter of the 3,000 questioned by researchers claimed they had an encounter with the paranormal.
Some 37 percent said aliens and ghosts were the basis of their belief system.

Though there are some that believe these numbers were skewed...

The survey was done by a marketing firm in conjunction with the release of an X-Files DVD, and details of how the poll was conducted were not reported in the Daily Mail. Survey questions, depending on how they are written, can greatly skew results, along with how subjects are sampled.

That said, the poll of 3,000 people found that 58 percent believe in the supernatural, including paranormal encounters, while 54 percent believe God exists. Women were more likely than men to believe in the supernatural and were also more likely to visit a medium.

Indeed, humans are prone to believing in things they can neither see nor find logical evidence for.
A survey of U.S. college students done in 2006 found 23 percent of freshmen had a general belief in paranormal concepts — from astrology to communicating with the dead. Interestingly, the number jumped to 31 percent among seniors and 34 percent among graduate students.

James Randi challenges psychic

11-15-08: John Edwards is called out again.

World renowned skeptic, James Randi, has been on the tail of 'psychic' John Edwards. Randi is best know for his $1million challenge of the paranormal. This challenge is interesting: Show proof of the paranormal or provide evidence of psychic powers, all within a controlled environment.

It’s quite interesting. The terms which Randi provides seems fair enough. A quick search on YouTube and you can find a lot of public psychic debunks performed by Randi. It’s actually quite disheartening to the belief in psychic abilities, it makes it seem as if they’re all out to deceive the public.

Randi has offered Edward $US1 million ($A1.5 million) to demonstrate his supernatural abilities under test conditions, but Edward states that such demands are inherently unfair.

Edwards states, "I once said to some scientists, 'You understand how lightning works, right?' And they're like, 'Yeah'. So I said, 'I'm going to mark an X on the floor and you're going to make lightning strike that spot four times in a row. Can you do it?' And they're looking at me, like, 'No'."

"Many years ago," Edward says, "some smart-ass kid said to me, 'Why don't dead people just say, 'My name is Joe and I died of lung cancer and I'm his father?' Well, they no longer have a physical body, so they have to rely on an energetic, symbolic communication to get their message across."

Looking back at the Cold War

This is certainly a neat article to come by. I've read about WWII having a interestingly high amount of research going into the paranormal, but don't think I've ever come by actual data from the Cold War.

Here are some excerpts from a great article:

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is well known for pushing the boundaries of science and technology in search of ways to give the U.S. military an edge—robotic pack animals, self-navigating vehicles and plant-based jet fuel, to name a few. Less well known is the agency's Cold War-era investigation into how paranormal phenomena like extrasensory perception might be used by the U.S. to get a leg up on the former Soviet Union and, perhaps more importantly, by the USSR against the United States.

Working with Washington, D.C., think tank RAND Corporation, DARPA determined that paranormal research by the Soviets focused on physical science, engineering and quantifiable results, whereas their U.S. counterparts tended to be psychologists looking instead to explore the human mind. The bottom line, according to a 1973 DARPA-commissioned study entitled "Paranormal Phenomena": "the U.S. has failed to significantly advance our understanding of paranormal phenomena."

The authors acknowledge that the study was limited, because it was based on but a sampling of works available at the time. Among them: a decade of abstracts from the parapsychology section of Psychological Abstracts, a print version of the PsycINFO abstract database of psychological literature. They knew even less about Soviet efforts, they admitted, noting that their conclusions on that front were based on a "somewhat impressionistic" sample and "some not always reliable and frequently imprecise reports of Western visitors to the Soviet Union."

Soviet research on telepathy dates from the early 1920s when a program was established at the Institute for Brain Research at Leningrad State University. The Soviets appear to have been fascinated with telepathy, which they called "biological communication," as a ship-to-shore way of communicating with submarines without using electronic equipment. They also considered training their cosmonauts to develop and use precognitive abilities to "foresee and to avoid accidents in space."

It seems the Soviets also were quite taken with the possibility of psychokinesis (using mental imagery to move objects) as a way of "disrupting the electrical systems associated with an ICBM's [intercontinental ballistic missile] guidance program."

The Soviets were more inclined than American scientists to believe that paranormal phenomena might be the result of "bioenergetics," or the energy given off by the metabolic processes of living things. This theory stated that people exuded "bioplasma," (a theoretical energy field) that, under certain conditions, was capable of emitting charged coherent radiation beyond the body surface in the form of electrons and possibly protons.

Although the Soviets did not reach a consensus on the existence of bioplasma, RAND concluded, "the very pursuit of this theory indicates that Soviet parapsychologists were attempting to explain alleged paranormal phenomena with a greater degree of specificity than their Western counterparts."

TAPS is under attack

11-7-08 : YouTube attacks credibility of TAPS

Some wild happenings have been going throughout the paranormal community recently.

I don't recommend watching any of the videos quite yet because they are all opinions, not facts, but I'm sure some solid videos will be coming out soon. The allegations are centered specifically around the LIVE Halloween program. Allegations range from anywhere from the fact that the cast were taking cues, to the loud EVP, to the coat tug.

Keep an eye out! It's certainly interesting, but it's sad to see so many people are willing to turn their backs on the TAPS crew.

11-2-2008 : The apparition of a boy?

I just came across this video. The case itself is quite morbid, and not a happy subject, but the video itself has gotten some attention.

HERE is the full video. The portion of the video that is in question is at the very end, so choose to watch the entire thing or skip right to it. The exact timing of the scene is at 0:18 - 0:12. Over the mans shoulder you see something moving across the screen.
Some say it's the boy that was killed.

Quite interesting. Is it just a reflection in the glass or is this an actual entity caught on camera?

The posters didn't provide a lot of details, but it should be a great opportunity to get some great info.

Rosemary is a popular member in the paranormal community.
She's gone on invetigations with TAPS, she has an article in the popular TAPS Paramagazine, has been to many high profile locations and has many published books under her belt.

She's known for her use with the Franks Box and other "Ghost boxes" so, I'm looking forward to any input on those that she may have.

The Post: What was the first memory you have of dealing with the paranormal?

Lorraine Warren: Well my husband actually grew up in a home that was haunted and it was in that home, for some reason, nothing was solved. … I believe that his searching was to see if other families experienced what he experienced at a young age, up until the age of 12 when they finally left that house.

Now myself, I had never been in a haunted house in my life, but I attended a private Catholic girls’ school (in Connecticut). I began to notice in our class that I was seeing lights around the heads of people — some of the nuns, the girls in class — and I made the mistake of telling one of the nuns that her lights were brighter than Mother Superior’s. … That was a big mistake. What I was really looking at was the aura around people — that is what I was seeing. … My first experience that was so profound was when I was in a home in Henniker, N.H., called the “Ocean Born Mary House.” In that house, I had an out-of-body experience where I could look down and see my husband sitting there and see the man that he was interviewing and see the couple that was with us but I was way above them. And I could see my own body …

The Post: Can you tell me about some of your more prestigious cases, like the Amityville Horror case?

Lorraine Warren: Well, I can tell you that the Amityville Horror, the Amityville case I should say, with reality we spent tremendous amounts of time with the family, with the Catholic priest that was involved with the case. We fell victim just as the priest had fallen victim and the family. I very seldom really talk about that. That is a real personification of evil, that home. I don’t really talk about it, but believe me, that was reality.

The Post: Can you tell me about being on A Haunting and Paranormal State? What kinds of things do they have you do on these shows?

Lorraine Warren: … I discern in these homes what it is we are dealing with and what it is that needs to be done to rectify it, like bringing in the clergy or things of that nature …

The Post: Do you have any final thoughts you would like to add to anything?

Lorraine Warren: Well at this time of the year I like to tell people, you know, how to protect yourself. Don’t do foolish things. Don’t play with a Ouija board, don’t go and try to conjure spirits because it’s the Halloween season and don’t go into graveyards for the sake of going into graveyards. Because you are opening doors to an occult world and it can be extremely dangerous and have very sad aftereffects on you.

Full Body Apparition Caught on Camera!

10-13-08 : Very neat pic!

Paranormal Investigator, Kristen Sheley, captured a fantastic photograph on an investigation last week.

"The investigation was in a former school-turned-rec-center. The building was built in the 1920's and totally gives off a Garden Home vibe. The place had hard cement floors and high ceilings, which made every single noise echo and magnify like crazy. Part of the building's facilities include a performance theater, which is where the activity is supposed to be centered, so we had video cameras set up.

People took different stations when the investigation started around 7 P.M. Myself, Holly, and Carol had our digital cameras and were told to go upstairs and check that out. There was one class taking place up there, otherwise the floor would be empty. When we reached the top of the stairs, Holly -- who is our group's psychic/sensitive -- said that she sensed something. She whipped out a digital thermometer and got some fluctuations in the temperature.

The Photo had been shot around 7:20. At 7:30, we went down to the theater (per instructions, we were going to rotate sites during the investigation) and when the news came about what I had captured on camera, everyone got super excited. Capturing any sort of ghost figure -- this is a "shadow figure," which is one type of ghostly manifestation -- is very unusual, and in fact no one in our group, in all the investigations, has gotten something quite like this."
